Brigitte Keller: Paintings
Opening Reception: First Friday Art Walk, May 2, 5 - 8 PM

Brigitte Keller, After the Rain, egg polymer emulsion on canvas, 50" x 50"

The Daniel Kany Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by York resident, Brigitte Keller. The artist's May exhibition, her first at Daniel Kany Gallery, features eight paintings produced mostly within the past year.

Keller blends polymer-based paints with wax and egg and applies the paint mixture layer on translucent layer. Keller's newest works reveal themselves as tonally-balanced rectangular grids. From within and among the loose geometric structures, organic forms reveal themselves or subtly fade into the background. Keller's newest series of works quietly circles around the idea of walking in a garden. She moves beyond the notion of painting as mere image through the deep-seated and compelling Modernist strategy of positing the viewer physically before the painting and, by association, within her garden landscape.

Keller's paintings are reductive, subtle and beautiful. They are quiet but speak with a sophisticated eloquence. They present as simple, tonal experiences – certainly easy on the eye – but they unfurl with an understated elegance into in complex blossoms. At first glance, a small canvas might appear to be a white monochrome with a few geometric intrusions or bits of punctuation. A quiet moment later, though, the layers have revealed great color and often appealingly witty forms. The growth in Keller’s works is meditative and spiritual yet aesthetically indulgent like a good wine or a mature natural garden. To this end, Michael Culver, the Director of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, has said of her work: "Keller's compellingly strong compositions embody a silent dignity, their refined forms, and colors so perfectly matched as to suggest a kind of spiritual union."
